I am compelled the mark the longest day. 21st June, 2008 means we are half way through the year. It is the longest day of the year although we don't notice the difference too much here in the tropics. Essentially it means that from now on the days will become shorter until Winter is over. Doesn't it make you feel insignificant and worry about your mortality as the years speed by? Perhaps its my age?
The rain, rain and even more rain and then some more has been quite tedious. June this year, has brought massive amounts of water to Hong Kong . I have lost count of the number of umbrellas I have left in various places or that have broken and had to be replaced immediately as the incessant rain just kept pouring down. Umbrella manufacturers must have sold record numbers over the last few weeks. But that is insignificant compared to the serious landslides that have occurred around the Territory causing road blocks and detours.
So when the sun came out yesterday, which I think must have been connected to it being the longest day, and the temperatures sored to 31C it was such a relief BUT now it's hot hot hot and we are all sorry we complained about the rain because now it's stopped the heat is too much to stand. Today we are hiding indoors and avoiding the crowds that have descended upon Sai Kung in their thousands and causing congestion on the roads and in the supermarket.
Here are some photographs taken from our window yesterday evening. It was the first clear day and evening we have had for nearly a month and there was a beautiful full moon reflecting in the South China Sea.
Ah well, what I mean was that from 21st June to 21st December, which is the shortest day, the days gradually get shorter so even though it is summer the days get darker and darker day by day.
