Last summer Hong Kong introduced a new rule, or is it law? I am not wholly sure but I know that ever since the change the plastic bag situation in our household has reached crisis point. I am, for the most part, a supporter of protecting the environment and reducing the amount of rubbish in the Hong Kong landfill. But the plastic bag rule has turned me into a plastic bag fiend.
Let me explain. We have a dog. He needs exercise. He needs to get outside and go for walks. He needs to relieve himself in the outdoors. Obviously he is not a poncy namby pamby Hong Kong type dog. He has no clothes or accessories, he walks on his own legs without the aid of a dog pushchair and does not pose for photographs with his owner making the V sign while holding the facial expression of a sickly frog and is not 100% germ free. He is a real dog. We are responsible dog owners and take him for walks. That involves picking up poo. Therefore, we need a supply of plastic bags but since Welcome and ParkNShop no longer throw them at you willy nilly, packing one item per bag, then our supply has depleted rapidly. At one time it got to the point where I had to, wait for it, buy some on a roll for the sole purpose of picking up poo.
But now I score free plastic bags. I have become an expert at it. I carry my own shopping bags neatly folded in my handbag which I use in shops where the charge for plastic bags is 50c, obviously not on bags without handles because that's the rule. But for other shops or market stalls, ie not Welcome or ParkNShop, when they say "Do you need a bag?" then my answer is always yes whereas before this rule I would always decline. Every time this happens I am inwardly thrilled at my expertise at collecting carrier bags so that we will always have poo bags for dog walks.
